El candidato de ultraderecha José Antonio Kast se impuso este domingo en las elecciones presidenciales de Chile con el 57,4 % de los votos escrutados, derrotando por una ventaja cercana a los 20 puntos a la aspirante de izquierda Jeannette Jara, según datos del Servicio Electoral.
Con este resultado, el abogado y exdiputado ultracatólico, líder del Partido Republicano y de 59 años, se sumó a la ola de dirigentes de extrema derecha que gobiernan en distintos países y se convirtió en el primer político abiertamente pinochetista en llegar a La Moneda desde el retorno a la democracia.
Kast había respaldado públicamente la continuidad del general Augusto Pinochet durante el plebiscito de 1988, cuando era estudiante de Derecho en la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Décadas después, en su primera campaña presidencial de 2017, reforzó esa cercanía al afirmar que, de haber estado vivo, el exdictador habría votado por él.
El nuevo mandatario se prepara ahora para asumir el poder el próximo 11 de marzo, con la intención de aplicar un programa de orientación neoliberal que contempla amplios recortes y una política de mano dura frente a la delincuencia y la migración irregular, tras su holgada victoria electoral.
Aunque la llegada al poder de un defensor de la dictadura resulta inédita en Chile, no lo es en la región, donde ya se han registrado casos como los de Jair Bolsonaro en Brasil o Javier Milei en Argentina. Hasta ahora, el único presidente de derecha elegido desde el fin del régimen militar había sido Sebastián Piñera, quien gobernó en dos períodos no consecutivos y se manifestó en contra de la permanencia de Pinochet.
